DIGI I’s New Factories in Iwate, Japan Double POS System Production Capacity
DIGI I’s, a group company of DIGI/TERAOKA, announced the completion of its new Southwest Factory, designed specifically for the production of POS systems, and South Factory, a hybrid facility combining manufacturing and warehouse functions. These facilities have commenced full-scale operations since March 2024.
DIGI I’s serves as a primary production base for the DIGI/TERAOKA Group in Japan, manufacturing a wide range of products including POS systems, scales, wrapping machines, and price labelers. The products are produced and shipped globally.
Constructed on a vast 20,000 square-meter site, the new facilities feature a unique, pillar-free design that allows for flexible layout changes to accommodate various production needs. This design also enables safe and efficient movement of materials, streamlining the entire manufacturing process from assembly to Direct Store Delivery (DSD).
DSD is a unique DIGI system that involves completing all assembly, wiring, data input, and program installation at the factory before direct delivery to the customer. By eliminating the need for an additional transportation step, DSD reduces the environmental impact of transportation and significantly cuts down on on-site installation time, contributing to increased customer satisfaction. Currently, 95% of DIGI/TERAOKA's POS systems are delivered through DSD.
The Southwest Factory, spanning 4,400 square meters, is exclusively dedicated to POS system production and offers a 50% increase in capacity compared to the previous facility. The South Factory, the largest facility within DIGI I's, is a hybrid facility combining factory and warehouse functions over an area of approximately 5,000 square meters. It provides ample space for short-term projects and increased production while ensuring efficient management and supply of materials.
DIGI I's is committed to sustainable production and consumption. The company has been ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System) certified since 2000, demonstrating its dedication to environmentally friendly business practices. The newly constructed South Factory is equipped with solar panels that generate 15% of the facilities' total electricity consumption.
DIGI I's is also focused on achieving zero emissions. The company has developed a "Pallet Delivery" system, which eliminates the need for packaging materials for large products, such as POS systems. In addition, since 2020, DIGI I's has been adopting "packaging-less" practices for medium and small-sized products, replacing cardboard and styrofoam with reusable padded packing materials. These initiatives have significantly reduced waste and improved operational efficiency.
