System Creation

At TERAOKA/DIGI, we are creating systems that ensure sustainable production and consumption by carefully considering the environment and promoting innovation. Three themes that represent this activity are (1) eco-instruction, (2) environmental management, and (3) zero emission. TERAOKA/DIGI is creating new standards through our system creation efforts that take societal issues into account.

Eco-Instruction

Bottle Squash, TERAOKA/DIGI’s volume-reducing PET plastic bottle reverse vending machine, was installed at the Seimei Festival, a school festival of the Seimei Gakuen School (Ota ward, Tokyo). We explained what goes into recycling a PET bottle in a fun way, while letting the students directly experience how the PET bottle volume is reduced, so they could develop an interest in the topic. Through such eco-instruction, TERAOKA/DIGI is getting actively involved in helping local children learn about the importance of recycling and the circular economy in an easy-to-understand way.

Environmental Management

One of TERAOKA/DIGI’s production bases, DIGI I's (Iwate Prefecture), received ISO14000 certification for environmental management in 2000. With energy saving activity as the main focus, they are implementing a variety of concrete measures, including (1) monitoring demand to save power, (2) segmenting lighting switches, (3) switching to LED lighting, (4) setting air conditioners to 28 degrees C in summer, (5) using insulating paint on shutters, (6) installing “green curtains” of foliage to shade the outside of the buildings, and (7) checking for compressor air leaks in their manufacturing equipment.
In addition, 480 solar panels have been installed at DIGI I’s. Normally, they sell electricity to the electric power company, but in the event of a power failure, they have a system in place that allows them to use the solar panels for emergency power.

Zero Emission

Zero Emission

The major thrust of TERAOKA/DIGI's system creation is zero emission.
We are actively promoting efforts for achieving zero emission, such as (1) reducing packing materials using Direct Store Delivery and Pallet Delivery, (2) thorough waste sorting and analysis using Environment Navi, and (3) making efforts to reduce overall paper usage.

Direct Store Delivery (DSD)

Direct Store Delivery (DSD) was started in 2005 as a system unique to TERAOKA/DIGI where all product setup work, such as assembly, wiring, data input, and program installation is completed at the factory, after which the product is delivered directly to the customer.

DSD also reduces the environmental impact of product transport, since the delivery by truck requires a single trip, rather than the two trips that were previously needed. The time required for installation is also greatly reduced, further increasing customer satisfaction. Currently 95% of TERAOKA/DIGI POS systems are delivered using DSD.

Pallet Delivery (PD)

Pallet Delivery is a new mode of product transport developed at the same time as DSD. Intended for transport of large-size products such as POS systems, a dedicated shipping pallet is designed for each product from the ground up, realizing a transport method that does not use packaging materials.

PD significantly reduces packaging material waste. Packing and unpacking work is also reduced, leading to improvements in business operations. PD also allows items being delivered to the same destination to be stacked inside the truck, thereby allowing more shipments to be consolidated and realizing less expensive and more environmentally friendly product transport. We have succeeded in reducing the number of transport trucks by 37%, which helps reduce the burden of product transport on the environment.
